Vermont is widely regarded as the heart of skiing in the eastern United States, with a long history and a dense concentration of ski areas in the Green Mountains. Resorts such as Stowe Mountain Resort, Killington Resort, and Sugarbush Resort offer some of the region’s largest terrain networks and longest seasons, while many smaller community hills contribute to the state’s strong ski culture. Vermont also holds an important place in skiing history: the first rope tow in the United States was installed in 1934 at Gilbert's Hill near Woodstock, helping launch the modern era of lift-served skiing. Today the state’s ski areas remain known for their challenging terrain, classic New England atmosphere, and a deep tradition of winter sports.
