North Carolina’s state parks protect some of the most diverse landscapes in the southeastern United States, ranging from barrier islands on the Atlantic coast to rugged peaks in the Appalachian Mountains. Managed by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, the system includes 42 state parks, recreation areas, and natural areas. Coastal sites like Hammocks Beach State Park preserve maritime forests, estuaries, and undeveloped beaches, while mountain parks such as Mount Mitchell State Park protect the summit of the highest peak in the eastern United States. Other parks highlight dramatic geological features, including the towering cliffs of Chimney Rock State Park and the waterfalls of Gorges State Park.
