New York’s ski areas are concentrated in the mountains of the Adirondacks and Catskills, where winter storms and cold temperatures create reliable skiing conditions across the state. The largest resort is Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, which hosted alpine events during the 1980 Winter Olympics and features the greatest vertical drop of any ski area in the eastern United States. Other well-known resorts include Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain Club in the Catskills, along with numerous smaller ski hills throughout the state.
