Massachusetts has one of the richest lighthouse traditions in the United States, reflecting the state’s long maritime history along the Atlantic Ocean and its busy colonial-era ports. Dozens of historic lights were built beginning in the early 18th century to guide ships through dangerous shoals, rocky coastlines, and the narrow channels surrounding Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. The oldest and most famous is Boston Light, first established in 1716 and considered the oldest continuously operating lighthouse site in the United States.
