Maine’s lighthouses are among the most iconic maritime landmarks in the United States, reflecting the state’s long and rugged coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. More than 60 historic lights have guided ships through Maine’s rocky harbors, foggy waters, and thousands of offshore islands since the early 19th century. Many were built to protect vessels navigating the busy shipping routes to ports such as Portland, Maine, Rockland, Maine, and Eastport, Maine. Well-known examples include Portland Head Light—the oldest lighthouse in Maine—as well as West Quoddy Head Light and Pemaquid Point Light. Today many of Maine’s lighthouses remain active aids to navigation while also serving as historic landmarks and popular tourist destinations along the state’s scenic coast.
