Guatemala’s national parks protect a remarkable mix of tropical rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and ancient archaeological sites. One of the most famous is Tikal National Park in the Petén region, where towering Maya temples rise above the surrounding jungle and form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the highlands, parks such as Pacaya Volcano National Park preserve active volcanic terrain and dramatic views of the surrounding countryside. Much of Guatemala’s protected land also lies within the vast Maya Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest tropical forest conservation areas in Central America. Together, these parks safeguard both the country’s extraordinary biodiversity and the cultural legacy of the ancient Maya civilization.
