California’s ski areas are concentrated in the Sierra Nevada, where high elevations and winter storms from the Pacific Ocean create some of the most scenic skiing in North America. The largest and most famous resorts include Palisades Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe, as well as Mammoth Mountain Ski Area farther south in the Sierra. These resorts feature extensive lift networks, high alpine terrain, and long seasons that can stretch well into spring. In addition to major destination resorts, California also has numerous smaller ski areas in the Sierra Nevada and southern mountains that provide accessible winter recreation for residents of nearby cities such as Sacramento and Los Angeles.
