Alaska’s state parks protect vast areas of rugged wilderness, coastal landscapes, and glacial terrain across the state. The system is anchored by Chugach State Park near Anchorage, which at nearly half a million acres is one of the largest state parks in the United States and features mountains, glaciers, and miles of backcountry trails. Other notable parks include Kachemak Bay State Park across the bay from Homer—the state’s first state park—and Denali State Park, which offers sweeping views of Denali and the Alaska Range. Unlike many state park systems focused primarily on developed recreation areas, Alaska’s parks emphasize large undeveloped landscapes where visitors can experience remote backcountry hiking, wildlife viewing, and the state’s immense natural scenery.
